Social Media Manager Job Description

A social media manager job description template, the ATS keywords that matter, and how to tell a focused role from five specialist jobs at one salary.

Entry levelMarketing and AdvertisingRemote

The word 'manager' in this title oversells the job more often than not. It usually implies people management or senior strategic ownership, but a large share of these postings are scoped, leveled, and paid as entry-level roles — the first titled marketing job someone gets, not a management position. The title isn't dishonest so much as inflated: 'coordinator' or 'associate' can read as too junior for a role that owns a public-facing channel, so 'manager' fills the gap. Worth knowing going in, especially since this posting itself is leveled as entry.

The bigger issue is scope, not title. A single posting will often ask for content creation — writing, and often shooting or editing short-form video — graphic design, community moderation, paid social execution, and analytics reporting. Any one of those is a full specialty at a larger company. Here, they are five line items on one entry-level job description.

Neither pattern is automatically a red flag. A small company built around one generalist running the whole channel can be a genuinely good way to learn fast, and a lot of people who now run brand social started exactly there. What's worth asking directly: is there a budget for paid social or is growth expected from organic posting alone, is there a designer to lean on for anything beyond a quick template, and is anyone senior actually reviewing what a first-year professional is deciding to say in public under the company's name.

About the role

Vellacourt is hiring a Social Media Manager to run our day-to-day presence across LinkedIn, Instagram, and X: planning posts, writing captions, engaging with our community, and reporting on what's working. You will report to the Content Marketing Manager and work alongside our design and content teams rather than replacing them.

This is an entry-level role with real ownership — you will run the channels day to day — but not an unlimited one. You are not expected to also design every graphic from scratch or manage a paid social budget alone; we have a designer you can request assets from and a small monthly boost budget with clear guardrails.

What you'll do

  • Plan and publish a weekly content calendar across LinkedIn, Instagram, and X.
  • Write captions and adapt long-form content into short-form social posts.
  • Monitor and respond to comments and messages within one business day.
  • Track follower growth, engagement rate, and click-throughs, and report monthly on what moved them.
  • Request and brief graphic assets from the design team rather than producing every asset solo.
  • Run small paid boosts on top-performing organic posts within an approved monthly budget.
  • Stay current on platform changes — algorithm shifts, new formats — and flag what's worth testing.
  • Coordinate with the Content Marketing Manager so social amplifies existing content rather than duplicating it.

What we're looking for

  • One or more years running a brand's social channels, including an internship or agency experience.
  • Strong, concise writing — this role is judged on captions, not long-form articles.
  • Working familiarity with a scheduling tool such as Buffer, Sprout Social, or Hootsuite.
  • Comfort reading a basic analytics dashboard and explaining what a number means, not just reporting it.
  • Enough judgment to know when a comment needs a manager's input before you reply publicly.

Nice to have

  • Basic graphic design skills in Canva or a similar tool, for quick edits that don't need the design team.
  • Experience shooting or editing short-form video for Reels, TikTok, or Shorts.
  • Familiarity with running or assisting a small paid social budget.
  • B2B social experience, if the employer sells to businesses rather than consumers.
  • A portfolio or link to channels you've actually run, not just channels you've posted on personally.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage starting on your first day.
  • 401(k) with a 3% company match.
  • Annual professional development budget of $1,500.
  • Fully remote, with a stipend for a home office setup.
  • Fifteen days of paid time off plus company holidays, rising to twenty after two years.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really an entry-level role if it asks for a year of experience?

In social media, yes — the field runs on internships and short agency stints more than most, so entry-level postings asking for a year of hands-on experience are common and not a bait-and-switch. What would be worth questioning is an entry-level posting asking for three-plus years, which is a mismatch between the title and the requirements.

Will I be expected to be reachable about the brand's social accounts outside work hours?

Ask directly — postings almost never say. Community management doesn't stop at 5pm, and some companies expect a manager to monitor and respond in the evening or on weekends without it being written down anywhere. If the posting doesn't mention an on-call rotation or weekend coverage, that's a fair interview question, not an awkward one.

Do I need to be able to design graphics myself?

Often yes, at least at a basic level in a tool like Canva, even when there's a dedicated designer for anything more involved. A social media manager who can only write captions and never touch a template tends to be slower than one who can ship a simple graphic without waiting on a request queue.
